PAST exhibitionS:
FULL Circle
solo exhibition - Westland Gallery - 2025
In 2025, I was invited to return for a month-long artist residency at the Pouch Cove Foundation in Newfoundland — this time in mid-winter. It was incredible to be able to experience this time of year, with snow against dark sculptural rocks, frozen waterfalls and crashing seas.
Influenced by the stark and dramatic landscape along the East Coast Trail, I created a series of gestural paintings on canvas, using a minimalist palette, evoking the feeling of large charcoal drawings.I was driven to capture the monumental and overwhelming qualities of this transcendent place.
In addition to this winter series, “Full Circle” also included more colour-filled works from a spring and fall series of works, both from Newfoundland and other favourite locations in Canada.
Landmarks
solo exhibition - Westland Gallery - 2024
The works in this collection represent a wide range of my work over the past 3 years. Inspired by landscapes in Newfoundland and Ontario, ‘Landmarks' include my painterly large-scale landscape abstractions, as well as smaller observational pieces: drawings, watercolours and plein air oil sketches.
The exhibition also includes pieces from my recent large oil sketches on canvas collection — airy and gestural works, minimalist, yet full of expression and movement.
As always in my work, this exhibition explores an ongoing artistic dialogue between drawing and painting — with gestural "mark-making” and a passion for Canadian landscapes the guiding force.

Lisa Johnson’s solo exhibition ‘Metamorphosis’ is an evolution of enquiries into space and movement within the context of landscape painting. Johnson is fascinated with art
history, drawing upon the techniques of past masters from Rubens and de Kooning to Soutine and Tom Thompson. Through her ethereal and sculpted pigment Johnson depicts vast landscapes where figures seem to poetically emerge. Drawing inspiration from on location studies to develop large studio works, her paintings weave geographic, corporeal, and abstract sensibilities through layers of atmospheric grounds and gestural mark making. Her work speaks to the passage of time over an evolving landscape painted with spirit and musicality. |
Many thanks to Brooke Johnson who produced this video documentation of the show opening.
