Plein air painting is an important part of my artistic process. I paint and sketch on location and later once back in the studio I am able to draw upon memories of that landscape in creating my larger works.
These pieces below are small oil paintings on birch wood panels. Locations include Newfoundland's east shore, Mazinaw Lake, Lake Superior among others. |
Many of these works were done "en plein air" . This sketching process often helps to inform the larger paintings back in the studio.
One of the subjects -- Bon Echo at Mazinaw Lake has been a favourite painting spot for artists over the centuries. Algonquin pictographs can be seen at the water's edge of a magnificent cliff that rises 100 meters straight up from one of the deepest lakes in Ontario. Members of the Group of Seven, A.Y. Jackson, Lismer, Casson and Carmichael painted here, as well as many others before and since. Johnson continues to return to study "the Rock". A recent show in 2015 at Project Gallery, "Mazinaw", featured large and small paintings chronicling the journey to paint this magical place.
Bon Echo related works are currently available at Quinn's Fine Art Gallery in Tweed, ON and through the Colin Edwards Gallery at Bon Echo Provincial Park.
